Chromebook: Changing the Language

For our multilingual students the ability the alter the language on a Chromebook can be very helpful. To accomplish this follow the steps below.

 

Changing the Device's Language 

Altering this setting will change the language for all of the Chromebook menu items and settings.

  • After logging into the device, click on the time in the lower right corner
  • Click on the settings icon, then click "Advanced" on the left side of the menu
  • In the expanded section find "Languages and Inputs" and click on it
  • In the window click on "Languages"
  • Find where it says "Device Language" and click "change" next to it 
  • Type or choose your preferred language
  • Click confirm and restart your device

 

Add/Remove Web Content Languages 

Follow these steps to add languages you understand, and order them based on preference, to read web content in your preferred language when it is available. 

  • After logging into the device, click on the time in the lower right corner
  • Click on the settings icon  then click "Advanced" on the left side of the menu 
  • In the expanded section find "Languages and Inputs" and click on it
  • In the window click on "Languages"
  • Find where it says "Website languages" and click the "Add languages" option below it
  • Type or choose your preferred language and select "Add"
  • Next to your preferred language select the More option (three dots)
  • Choose an option: 
    1. To show web content in this language when it’s available, select "Move to the top". Your translations will appear in order of preference.
    2. To remove a language from your preferred list, select "Remove".
    3. To make the Google Translate pop-up box for web content appear on Google Chrome, select "Offer" to translate pages in this language. This option appears only if you’ve turned on "Translation suggestion".

 

Turn Translation Suggestions On/Off

Turning this on will give you the option to have Chrome suggest to translate a webpage. 

  • After logging into the device, click on the time in the lower right corner
  • Click on the settings icon then click "Advanced" on the left side of the menu
  • In the expanded section find "Languages and Inputs" and click on it
  • In the window click on "Languages"
  • At the bottom turn "Translation suggestion" on or off

 

Tip: If you’ve turned on Translation suggestion and want to read a webpage in a different language, in the address bar, select Translate.

 

Changing the Keyboard Language

Altering this setting can allow users to type in different languages and even use some of the symbols that are unique to that language. For more information about how to alter the keyboard input to better type in other languages, check the Google Support page.
