Chromebook: Keeping OS Up-to-Date

Like all district devices, Chromebooks run off of an operating system (OS) that regularly comes out with new versions. On district Chromebooks there are various issues that can arise if a chromebook falls too far behind on updates. For instance the "Apps" button on the log on screen may vanish if it is too far behind. Regardless of issues that may arise, it is always good to keep chromebooks up-to-date using the following methods.

Checking Chrome Version

  • log onto the chromebook

  • In the lower left corner click on the little circle to search

  • Type "update" and select " check for update "

  • Here it will either give you an option to check for updates, or tell you you are up-to-date

  • If your device finishes checking for updates and the "check for updates" button is still there click it again until it tells you that it is up-to-date

Shutting Down

One important step to finish any install of an OS is to perform any restarts the machine might need. Students often choose to close the lid instead of shutting down their machine periodically. Try encouraging students to shut down their machine every so often so any update waiting to be finalized can begin running with the next boot up.
