To help protect you and District 11 from cybersecurity threats, Technology Services is adding Duo two-factor authentication to help secure accounts and prevent phishing attacks.

Who Does This Effect?
All central office staff, school based staff, temporary workers, substitute staff, persons of interest and the like, are included. This group also includes any staff in contract now and moving forward.

What are Phishing Attacks?
Phishing is an attack that attempts to steal personal information, such as password credentials, by pretending to be from a legitimate source. Cybercriminals typically pretend to be reputable people like companies or friends in a fake message.

What is Duo Two-Factor Authentication?
District 11’s response to phishing attacks is Duo Security. Duo Security is a two-factor authentication solution that makes it harder for malicious individuals to bait users into sharing username and passwords. Duo provides a second layer of security to Colorado Springs School District 11 logins to vulnerable systems by requiring extra information, or a physical device to log in. It is likely that you use two-factor authentication with other personal systems such as online banking, insurance, iTunes and more.

Learn more about two-factor authentication by watching this 2-minute video.

How will Duo Change my Login Experience?
Duo only triggers when you are NOT connected to District 11 WiFi, and you are logging in to systems (district email, OneDrive, Teams, Google suite) on a device. Duo does not replace or require you to change your username and password. Think of Duo as a layer of security added to your pre-existing login method.

Why do we Need Two-Factor Authentication?
Providing two-factor authentication security is required for continued cyber-security insurance coverage. Login credentials are more valuable than ever, and are increasingly easy to compromise. Most breaches today involve compromised usernames and passwords. Two-factor authentication enhances the security of your account by using a secondary device (your smartphone or a fob) to verify your identity. This prevents anyone but you from accessing your account, even if they know your password.
